Boogie Bar – Bucharest

It is 11:49 am on Sunday September 16th.  I have not been this hung-over in an extremely long time.  My head is pounding!  I know I am not alone in this battle though; I have some fellow comrades feeling the same way.   The boys I speak of are my two beer drinking Dutch mates who kept swapping stories with me and slamming beers until the early morning hours, Mitchell and Jacob, don’t worry gents we’ll make it through!

It’s amazing how a few beers can bring out the greatest stories.

It’s amazing how a few beers can bring out the greatest stories.  Good times I say.  This was my first gig at Boogie Bar and it definitely will not be the last (I think they will have me back).  The venue was so small and intimate with little caricatures all over the walls portraying amazing rock stars from all eras.  Looking up and seeing photos of famous rockers was a bit inspiring.  This is one of those places where you are close enough to sweat on your audience.  I stole that perspective from a live set done by my most recent influential artist, Frank Turner.  I highly recommend checking out his music if you have not yet.

OK back to me.  Some of the other friends in the audience were my lovely folks from Replay Cross Fit who help me make chubby look sexy haha.  I warned them that I would be sweating more on stage than I do at the workouts and boy was I right.  I really started sweating during a song called “Joe’s Song.”   It’s my most recent happy beer drinking country song about me surprising my mom with an unexpected visit home to St. Louis, Missouri in November 2015.  I don’t have this one recorded yet, but I will be sure to get it at the next gig, it makes me smile from ear to ear when I play it.  It felt real good to write a song about being back home.  Being this far away from home, I don’t get that type of inspiration often, so it was nice to feel drunk with happiness back in my old ways.

drunk with happiness back in my old ways, which is the ending line of the last verse, and pretty much sums up the entire vibe of the song.  I recall a real big applause when I finished this song and I remember thinking “I can write good things not inspired by love and heart break, yay!”   Damn near all of my songs are inspired by love, but when you listen to music, there is always heartbreak hidden somewhere.  It’s just the way it is.

There was a man named Thomas at my gig as well.  Thomas was from Texas.  He told me that during my set he felt a feeling so strong inside that he went outside and just took a look at the sky to reflect on life.  For me, that was amazing to hear.  My lyrics are very important to me.   In that moment, I had reassurance that music is my true calling in this life.

Juu ya Mawingu, high above the clouds.

Another song I busted out during this set was a jam called “Juu Ya Mawingu” which means high above the clouds in Swahili.  I wrote this during my most recent trip to Tanzania Africa.  I have a few posts about my times in Africa as well.  Go check them out!  Unfortunately I did not get the best recording of the song, but I will try again on Wednesday to capture this one because I really want to share it with all my Tanzanian friends!  The song and the experience that made the song happen are times I hold close to me.  If I am ever having a bad day, I just think about my friends who are hiking the mountain and working their Asses off to make a living.  My life is just fine.  I am laying in a bed with an air conditioning unit blowing on me sipping a hit cup of coffee in my underwear (too much detail, sorry! )It is now 3:56, and I am still hung-over.  I really need to go for a run to sweat out these demons.  Hope you enjoyed my morning after the gig post.  Stay tune for more stories from Africa and #behindthelyric sessions.
